A “KALEIDOSCOPE AT NIGHT” ON THE TOKYO SKYLINE DURING NEW YEAR’S AND FUJI-TV’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Tokyo, Jan. 5---Tonight media artist Akira Hasegawa’s Digital Kakejiku, D-K Live on the façade of FUJI-TV Network headquarters building in Tokyo’s Daiba waterfront area, came alive with the slowly moving, brilliantly colored, gigantic abstract images…a “Kaleidoscope at Night”. The spectacular electronic art installation projected clear, sharp, colorful images from the globe atop the architecturally distinctive building, down the façade where they were reflected on the shimmering water. D-K Live at FUJI-TV Headquarters, January 5 – 9, will entertain Tokyo residents during New Year’s and celebrate 50 years of FUJI-TV broadcasting. By selecting Akira Hasegawa, who has won many international awards for his Digital Kakejiku art installations which have been viewed by millions around the world for this event, FUJI-TV Network reinforced it’s long history of corporate support for Art and Culture which includes presenting critically acclaimed exhibitions, such as three “Masterworks from the Museum of Modern Art, New York”, and Fujisanke Communications Group’s co-sponsorship of the prestigious Praemium Impericale Award and Hakone Open-Air Museum.

“I’m honored to create D-K Live on FUJI-TV Network Headquarters during New Year’s week so that Tokyo residents can enjoy it and celebrate,” Hasegawa said while setting up his projectors for the event. Hasegawa, the inventor of a sensitizing machine which projects over 1 million abstract images he created on computer, uses electronics and cyber-graphics to update the traditional Japanese hanging scroll. The slowly moving, constantly changing images, transition gradually…they appear still, but look away and they are totally transformed. This effect is usually described as similar to dawn or the setting sun. This process incorporates science, art, nature and the Spirit into a new phenomenon, which is described in Japanese high school technology textbooks. “The building you see everyday, becomes something magical with D-K Live at night. D-K Live is based on the Spiritual, Nature and the Universe,” he said. “What you see and feel, comes from you. Each person perceives it differently…that is what brings the mystery and joy!’

These mesmerizing, enchanting images have fascinated crowds worldwide at UNESCO World Heritage sites and at many contemporary art museums, temples, shrines, monuments, historical buildings and samurai-era castles in Japan. Hasegawa celebrated his 100th D-K Live art installation since he started in 2002, in June of last year. D-K Live at San Jose City Hall, the American for the Arts, Recognition Award winning installation that was the highlight of ISEA/ZeroOne San Jose: “The Global Festival of Art on the Edge,” is featured along with a monograph explaining technical aspects.

In November, 250,000 people witnessed D-K Live at The Grand Ise Shrine for the opening of the reconstructed Uji Bridge, where it was called “a Good Luck Omen” by one of the High Priests. D-K Live was filmed there in HD by Peter H. Chang of Cinefugue Productions, as part of the feature documentary, “Children of Enlightenment” (now in production), which will present Japanese youth counter-culture to an international audience. It was also filmed in 4K HD for an experimental pilot television series that is a co-production between, Cross Media International (http://www.crossmediainternational.com) and Cinefugue (http://cinefugue.com), with footage also to be used as part of a separate HD documentary called “Lightscapes”, on Akira Hasegawa himself.

Hasegawa wants his Digital Kakejiku, D-K Live on FUJI-TV Network Headquarters, January 5 – 9, 2010, to be “a Good Luck Omen” for the New Year.

Once in a life time

In Japanese ZEN words, we find '一期一会'(Ichi-Go Ichi-E), which can be translated in English, 'Just One time, One meets'. Sometimes, we have a chance to meet somebody, find a certain place, time, opportunity and good luck that we did not expect and would never meet again. Japanese consider this ZEN saying as one of the sententious ZEN words that they should remind of it in their daily life.

On March 20th,2009. It was Friday evening on the Spring Equinox Day. Three musicians with a Saxophone, a Didgeridoo, Oud and Throat Singer performed their psychic sounds at ELIXIR bar in Edobori, Osaka. The live performance was named, 'Neo-Ethnic DroneDrive'.

I was there to produce a light effects at those musicians' stage background. I prepared Digital Kakejiku light projection as usual in the loft of ELIXIR bar. The HD Video camera was capturing images of bar space where visitors were drinking and chatting. They seemed not cared about the light projection of D-K even if I directed the lights on their faces directly. They were waiting for the band of three men who were going to perform their live music with traditional instruments that were going to played an improvisation.

Three men went up the stairs to the balcony above the bar counter. They said nothing while they were about to start playing sounds. Throat singing, Didgeridoo produced dull sounds and the tone of saxophone overlapped.

They played those slow and roaring sounds as we heard in the middle of Eurasian Continent that we felt like going back to the ancient time when we walked around to find our native land existing somewhere in the Continent.

We just heard these psychic sounds for an hour and have realized that we were alive here.
Three players have stopped playing, then another three joined them for an extra jam session.

Instruments added to the previous ones were, a Pandeiro, a drum and a vocal. Those guys were not scheduled to perform this evening, however, the owner of the bar accepted them to perform at the balcony with light projection of Digital Kakejiku for my test. I took two projectors from the loft above the wall and installed them on the guests' table and connected wires and plugged into my PC that run D-K software.

A real live jam session which nobody could have expected was about to be started and I fixed my HD Video camera towards the balcony stage. They said that they were going to start a live music that would be performed once in thousands of years. The LIVE, "Ichi-Go Ichi-E" sounds had just been started.

Everybody gave applause to this instantaneous band that performed sounds in thousands of years. The girl who played as a vocal named this band as 'The fairest flowers soonest fade'.
In Japanese sentences, "美人薄命"　(Bi-Jin Haku-Mei), that meaning such a beautiful time and space we enjoy now and here would not last for long time. We had a chance.

In the cafe-bar, ELIXIR in uptown of Edobori,Osaka, I tested D-K lights projection towards two paintings on the wall of the bar. Two paintings were drawn by BEN HER, an American artist living in Osaka. He is working in a tatoo shop in Ame-Mura (American Village) downtown Osaka. One of his paintings is Han-nya (般若) that is known as a masque in the Noh Theater and the other one is known as Noh-men (能面) of a womman face (a masque used for Noh Theatre that is used by a masculin actor who plays a woman role.

It was 13th in the evening of Friday, I picked up 2 projectors that I had left at a bar in Namba, Osaka and I took a taxi to Edobori, Osaka. This evening, I was going to install Akira Hasegawa's D-K art in ELIXIR bar where several DJs would perform for the Friday evening.

It had been raining on Friday in Osaka city. Seasons of plum-blossoms has been ended and the cherry-blossom would be ready to please people in Osaka in few weeks.

When I had arrived at the bar, DJs had already arrived and I talked to the producer of this party here. He is known as an artist of live painting. His name is Bosshiko (http://bosshiko.blog83.fc2.com/) and he had planned and organized the evenings DJ party at ELIXIR bar. And a famous DJ,a.kawase（amoed'z factory productions）also attended and I took a glass of beer with them.

The owner of this bar, Kaori-san had advised me to projection lights toward the wall with 'Noh-men" paintings from the lofted space at the other side of the wall at the bar. I installed one projector toward the wall with paintings and the other to the balcon where DJs would play discs.

It was really amazing for me that the 'Noh-men' paintings appearances had been gradually changed as D-K lights moved on them. There were two faces of 'Noh-men' masque paintings were hanged on the wall. The one is masculin face of 'Oni' for evil spirits and the other is feminin face, a typical woman masque viewed in the Noh theatre. The two 'Noh-men' masque paintings appeared and dissapeared as D-K lights transit. Sometimes one face had been seen different from the original painting and deformed its shape and colours as D-K lights passed on the painting.

Last night, my friends came for drinks in night bar, O-Ki-Na-Wa in downtown, Sennnichi-Mae in Namba, Osaka. Saki is an owner of budget-hotel called, 'U-en (由苑) in the Christian district of Osaka city, Tom and his girl friend run each American antiques boutique in north of Osaka. Ben (Benjamin) from Australia joined the party and the bar master Tamura and his friend, Mayumi enjoyed the drumming session in Digital Kakejiku lights.

Digital Kakejiku had been installed in several histroical places as shrines and temples of the world heritages in Japan for a decade. This was the 95th Live performance for Akira Hasegawa that he performed his D-K art in this Tateyama Mountain ski resort as celebrating its snow festival. The live performance here on the snow was very first time for him. He commented that ski run was one of his favorite places where he longed for its installation.

Yes.Today is 95th installation of D-K I have done around the world as in Acropolis in Greece and some global art events.A ski run was the place where I wanted to install D-K mostly.Today I am very happy to be here to realize it. It is not at all bad for you to watch D-K with standing still, however,as D-K lights are spread over this large ski run deeply,everyone can walk around there to choose each one's best position to enjoy this art. After all, the snow canvas reflects most of lights and we can watch them most beautifully. Mountains and valley of the big nature would absorb all pictures projected there, and we can perceive those covering snow with D-K lights more naturally that we see it as it is. It is also one of D-K's charactristic that we can come back to the nature when we watch like this.

Well,because I have just one body as everyone, I cannot make it all at once, but I would like to install D-K at World Heritage sites one by one so that people would experience to know why that World Heritage is located there. I hope that they would remind it as seeing it. In fact, D-K is very ecological art. It does not require much electricity consumption and it does not emit any unnecessary stuff in the nature. We can call D-K as an Eco art.The value of mother nature that you ignore or its existence that you do not appreciate, I think it will be one of the great experience that you can feel and remind of mother nature's goodness and its depth here in this event.

First Time on Snow: Akira Hasegawa's, Digital Kakejiku, D-K Live at Thunderbird Valley

This morning I woke up at 4:30 a.m. in Osaka, and packed my bags to go to the Thunderbird Valley Ski Run on Tateyama Mountain. I'll take the JR West Train, the Thunderbird, from Kyoto to Toyama, then a Toyama local train to the station nearest to Thunderbird Valley---but I'm not going to ski. No, I'll be waiting for sunset, when Akira Hasegawa's Digital Kakejiku, D-K Live, brilliant, intensely-colored, abstract images that slowly move will be projected, this time, on cold, pristine, powdered snow. The reflection ratio of light on white, silvery snow is almost 99% (about the same as a mirror), so the bright lights and colors should really amaze my brain! I am wondering what kind of signals will be generated in my brain from seeing the kaleidoscopic D-K Live images projected directly on the snow this evening? I'm imagining how the crystalline whiteness of snow will transform the D-K Live images that I have experienced in so many other settings. Tonight my eyes will witness the magic of D-K Live, but this time, on snow.

I checked in at Tateyama Kokusai Hotel and the hotel man took me to the Thunderbird Valley by the car. Akira Hasegawa was in the attendant bangalow installed for the snow festival on ski run. He had been talked with a program announcer of live remote broadcasting for this evening's snow festival. I made the greetings with Akira and he took me outside on ski run where he introduced me to Mr.Hamaguchi, the director of this festival. On the ski run slope, trigonal pyramids like lamps for a summer fesitival were queued up and a snow dome and a slope for sleigh run were prepared for kids play. The mountain was not fully covered with snow and I could see it with bared trees, without any dusts of snow.

D-K lights were projected on ski run when it became rather dark after five o'clock, when my eyes got reflection of Digital Kakejiku lights on the snow.

First, Kids were noticed with D-K lights and started to yelp with delight. Girls run around on snow and boys dig up snow with their shoes on the ski run where D-K lights colored it in red. Adults stood still wondering what this was and began taking pictures in front of the snow dome.

Hi Carol,
It starts snowing in Japan Sea side area of Japan, including Akira's base town, Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture. He's been making a long trip across Japan island for weeks.

On 7th-8th Feb., d-k wll be installed on the Tateyama Mountain foot covered of 5-10 meters of snow. This time a snow festival organized by Ohyama Tourism Office, Toyama city, will invite d-k as the opening ceremony for this amazing snow festival in the middle of Japan Northern Alpes. D-K will be installed over its ski run, called 'Raicho(Thunderbird)' Valley from projectors at the parking lot.

This time I must go there to observe this installation because I cannot imagine any scenes where d-k is being projected over a large, silver screen..... A ski run of altitude from 480-1188 metre. As the ski run surface of 100% powder snow reflects all lights of d-k towards my eyes, I guess I get surely 'dazed' with those images appeared there.

Saturday evening, December 20,2006.
I took my daughters to the Expo Memorial Park in Suita,Osaka.
This park was constructed after the Expo'70 was held as
conservation of its memorial site.

From God descend to Earth (Advent before Noel)

The park is known with is huge statue called,
"Taiyo-no-Tou" (Tower of the Sun), created by
Taro OKAMOTO, a Japanese artist died in 1996.
Somebody said that the statue was quite similar to a painting
of Picasso in Vallauris,France.

This evening, d-k (digital-kakejiku) art that has been
demonstrated its LIVE performance at several historical
site as the Acropolis in Greece, the City Hall of San Jose,
California,USA, a World Heritage,Shiretoko peninsula, Japan
and others. I took my daughters to the park to show one of
most impressive luminous art that would have input strong
memories to their mind.

of the tower illuminated by d-k. I took a position just in front of
the tower and set my tripod to capture moving images of d-k.

As I had expected,the images reflected on the SUN TOWER
projected from two directions of big light-emitting devices
were strong enough to amaze me and I became dazed in my brain gradually.

Because the most part of the tower statue is painted in white,
the d-k lights were clearly reflected to our eyes,different kinds of
shape and colour were strongly reflected to my eyes naked. As d-k light
is emit usually towards the surfaces of architectures as a temple, buildings
and its interior wall that colours are less white and dark, the lights are
not so reflected as white ones of this evening. I suppose that the light
reflecting effect of this time was most strong one ever since I had experienced.

I finished capturing moving pictures of d-k light projections
and I had some 'Sake", rice wine for my brain that were started dazing,
to accelerate the effect of 'drug' that I was looking forward to getting HERE.
I sit myself on the grass and was staring the lights on the tower for a while.

While I was taking pictures in the mood of relaxing and happiness, Akira HASEGAWA
appeared in the grass square with a festival staff. I continued taking still photos
of moving images on the statue.

Then a man dressed in Japanese traditional clothes with a "Otsuzumi",Japanese drum
was standing in the center of the grass square. He started shouting between the
sounds of drum that spread over the park in silence. The man is one of most famous
"Otsuzumi" drum player in Noh theater, Shounosuke OKURA. He came here drumming and
shouting to invite GOD here as the SUN TOWER constructed in 1970, respires with
luminous ambience that d-k art supplies.

Shouting voices of Shounosuke OKURA were echoed in the park with changing
rhythms and intervals of "Otsuzumi" in his hands. Then he was standing in the
lights of GOD and I could find a luminous layer of d-k light reflection on the
grass ground that leaded to the SUN TOWER created by a Japanese genial artist.

本尊虚空蔵菩薩について
　虚空蔵（こくうぞう）とはその文字が現しておりますように、虚空即ち大空（宇宙）を意味するものであります。その大空の中には種々の物々、即ち日月、星をはじめ一切の山川、土地、草木などあらゆる森羅万象、生物をことごとく包容し、余すところないように納めておりますことは、ちょうど世間で云う大きな宝蔵に多くの財宝を収めておりますのと同様であるというようなわけで、虚空の姿を宝蔵になぞらえて、虚空蔵というのであります。
　大空（宇宙）はあらゆる一切の物を収蔵して、光、熱、雨、水、温、湿など、絶えず自然の恩恵を与え、平等に、しかも無限の動植物を育成しております。
虚空蔵菩薩はこの広大分限の大空の徳性を総合する霊位であり、我々のみ親でありますから、無限のご利益を人間をはじめ動植物の育成から一切の物資の生産に至るまで施与（ほどこ）し、守護（おまもり）しておられます。即ち「山川草木悉有佛性」の思想であり、自然現象から人間を始め生きとし生けるもの全ての生存、育成まで、これみな虚空蔵菩薩様の御慈悲であると云う考え方なのであります。
　そして特にこの法輪寺の虚空蔵菩薩は降臨せられましたときの御本誓に「智恵を得んと慾し」、「福徳を得んと慾し」、「種々の芸道に長じ、技芸に上達せんと慾し」、「玄妙の域に達するような流暢な音声を出し、歌舞音曲の奥義を極め栄達を得んと慾し」、「官位、称号、免許を得るように慾し」、「内外とも身分にふさわしい威徳を得るように慾し」・・・など祈願するものは、わが名（虚空蔵尊名）を称念（おとなえ）せよとお説きになっています。
　このことと、法輪寺の由来が秦代族らもともと工芸、技芸を職とした人々に深く信仰された「葛野井宮」が起源であることと合わせて、幼少年期より青年期に移ろうとする人生の転換期に、智福を与え、技芸に長じさせ給えとの虚空蔵寺への守護祈願、即ち毎年四月十三日十三歳になった男女が参詣する「十三詣り」の慣わしや裁縫、服飾、芸術など技芸の上達を祈願する「針供養」（毎年十二月八日、二月八日）の行事が行われるようになったのではないでしょうか。
　又染織、漆器、彫刻、醸造、酒造など所謂美術工芸に関連した商工業者からも厚く信仰を得ているのも法輪寺虚空蔵尊の前記御本誓や、往古秦氏族の信仰していたことに関連していると思われます。

古来中国では陽（陽数）の極まる数字で
ある「九」が重なると云うことで重陽と
云われます。日本では「苦」につながると
云う感覚もありますが、中国などでは
おめでたい数字のようです。
この重陽の節句には菊酒を飲み厄を祓って
長寿を願い、菊の被綿（きせわた）と云って、
前の晩に菊に綿を被せ、これに降りた露で
身体を撫で拭くと、これまた長寿になると
伝わります。でも、この菊の被綿は中国には
ないらしく、日本独特の習慣のようです。
また、菊枕を作る風習もあって、重陽の日に
摘んだ菊の花を乾燥させ枕に詰めると、菊の
香りで長寿になると伝わります、
今で云うところのアロマセラピーのような
ものでしょうか。そして、女性から男性へ
菊枕を贈ることは特別な意味があったようで、
男女間の機微を綴る物語があったりします。

その法輪寺の歴史を遡ると、古墳時代、
三光明星尊を祀った「葛野井宮」
（かずのいぐう）にまで行き着きます。
この地は渡来人の秦氏一族が住んでいた
所と云われ、秦氏と云えば木島坐天照
御魂神社（このしまにますあまてるみ
むすびのやしろ）の三つ鳥居、通称三角
鳥居で知られますが、土木灌漑、養蚕、
酒造などをもたらしたことでも知られ
ます。舌を噛みそうなこの神社の通称は
「蚕の社」（かいこのやしろ）。普通の
鳥居は二面に対しますが、三角鳥居は
三面に対します。裏と表の感覚しかない
日本人には面食らう三角鳥居です。

その時代、南部には高麗（こま）氏、
北部には賀茂氏、東部には八坂の造
（みやっこ）の一族が住み着き、いわば
京都の先住人達です。

奈良時代に移ると、産業、技術の進んだ
この地に元明天皇の勅願により、五穀
豊穣、産業の興隆を祈願する葛井寺
（かづのいでら）が建立され、この
葛井寺が今に伝わる法輪寺と云うことに
なります。なお、応仁の乱による戦災を
被り、後陽成天皇により再建されるも
幕末の蛤御門の変で再び灰燼に帰し、
今の堂宇は明治、大正時代に再建された
ものです。

虚空蔵法輪寺と云われるように、ご本尊
は虚空蔵菩薩。これは弘法大師の高弟で
あった、道昌（どうしょう）僧正が大師
から「虚空蔵菩薩の霊験ある相応の地は
嵯峨葛井寺である」との教えにより、
修行の中で葛井の中に姿を表した虚空蔵
菩薩を彫りあげ祀ったのが、そのいわれ
です。奥州柳井津、伊勢朝熊と共に日本
三大虚空蔵と云われます。
虚空蔵菩薩は知恵と慈悲を司り、
鳥獣虫魚あるいは諸天善神に身を変じて
利を授け、日、月、星、そして自然界の
あらゆる森羅万象を宝蔵に納めている
そうです。

Report on d-k live installation in a ski resort mountain hill

On 14th of August, I went to a winter-ski resort located in the northern Japan Alpen, called "Tsugaike Ski Resort" located in the northern part of the Japan Alps.

There, thousands of young Japanese people were canping in the hill side of Tsugaike.

They were staying for few days in the camping place as they were enjoying on the music of international techno and trans music. The globally known festival, called "Mother S.O.S 2007" where a lot of world-famous techno-trans musicians were performing their arts.

In the evening of 14th August, I did participate this festival and had observed the d-k live installation on the hill side of Tsugaike.

As I am not so familir with trans-techno music, I could not realy enjoy with the music that I could get there.

However, I recognized very quickly that the d-k live installation in that mountain hill side was very different from that was already done at the place of temples and shrines as the d-k should be exposed against the real nature of the mountain foot and and the hill.

What was my first discovery of d-k performance that really impressed me was that its lighting effect on the road leads to the north direction.

Because the d-k lights spread on the real surface of an asphalt made road of the clour grey that refleccts on the d-k light, it looks like a real silver-screen in the theater that reflex on the light thru film.

On this road where d-k light were reflected on, I met young couple. The girl were all dressed in white and the light were reflected on the dress brilliantlly.

Akira Hasegawa's D-K Live Art Installation on Sannomiya Shrine, Motomachi,Kobe on 21st August 2007

After his installation on Monday, 20th of August 2007 at Hyogo Prefectural Hall, Akira Hasegawa did perform his Digital Kakejiku (D-K) art at one of the oldest Shintoism Shrine, Sannomiya Shrine located in the downtown of Kobe Harbour city.

The d-k light projection was executed on both front and rear surface of the shrine. As I was walking down the road to the shrine from north to the south after I had arrived the JR Motomachi station, I found very quickly the lights of d-k projected on the rear surface of the shrine.

The Shrine is located in the very middle of Motomachi are, the downtown of Kobe Hourbour city.This oldeste Shrine, Sannomiya is one of the eight branch shrines of the famous IKUTA Shrine in Sannomiya town. The Sannomiya shrine is contributed to the
naval pilot's fortune and for the marchands success, the god for ocean's trip and commerce.

As I have fishined taking photographs of the rear surfaces of the shirine, I have moved to the front side of it.

It was standing alone looking dazed in front of the shrine, the transient pictures of d-k really had been fascinated me. I lost my mind and I have no words to talk with anybody there. Then I started again to take pictures and videos.

Al the audiennce were amazed in front of d-k live performance and they were quite inspired of the changing surface of the shrine that they are all familiar with in the day light.

KOBE, June 28 – Media artist, Akira Hasegawa, discussed new directions for media art

with fellow artists at “Robot/Media/Art”, a Symposium sponsored by Kobe Biennale 2007,

at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, this afternoon. Afterwards, at sunset, he

demonstrated his creation, Digital Kakejiku, with a dazzling D-K Live show of computer-controlled light, color and abstract patterns projected directly onto the waterfront façade of

the museum and the Marina Stage, adjacent to Nagisa Park. Because the museum, the

Marina Stage and Nagisa Park are located in the New Metropolis area, in the Eastern Water

Redevelopment section, the D-K Live installation could be seen from vantage points all

over Kobe.

The D-K Live installation at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art was serene and

stunning as always. The geometric clarity of Tadao Ando’s architecture --- particularly the

vast flight of steps connecting the museum to the waterfront --- made an excellent backdrop for Akira Hasegawa’s light projections. The slight mist in the air, the sound of the

sea against the wharf, all contributed to a beautiful sensory experience.

Digital Kakejiku is an original concept and technique developed by the artist Akira

Hasegawa. He has used his knowledge of film, video and cyber arts to invent a unique

sensitizing instrument, which he calls D-K. D-K is a projection method for lighting up a large area (architectural or

natural surroundings) with random sequences of abstract images that appear still, but are actually undergoing constant sow change. If you look away for a minute, the image will be totally transformed. D-K comprises a projection of constantly updated

pixels of computer generated art. Its pixels are sequentially updated, so with D-K, there is no FPS rate, as with conventional film or video. It is perceived just like

the setting sun…as slow, almost imperceptible change. D-K’s abstract patterns and colors

are created by capturing cosmic noise and encoding it into digital data. When these images

are reproduced via a computer using Hasegawa-created software, it turns into an

artistic masterpiece…D-K Live.

Hasegawa has on the technique for over a decade, first using computer monitors,

then video projectors. He sees D-K as an architectural material, able to actively engage and

transform any context, applicable at a scale ranging from an urban event to a computer

screensaver. Because it is constantly changing, it is practically impossible to freeze-frame exactly the same image twice.

The possibilities of infinite variation have already attracted wide attention. D-K Live

installations have been presented on several contemporary art museums, on the three most

famous medieval, Samurai-era castles and ancient shrines in Japan, at Yuyuan Gardens in

Shanghai, within Tokyo’s new, architecturally stunning Roppongi Hills

complex and, under the auspices of UNESCO, at the Acropolis in Athens and the

Shiretoko Peninsula of Hokkaido, both of which are World Heritage sites.

Hasegawa’s D-K Live installation on the Richard Meier-designed new San Jose City

Hall, a part of last August’s ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge and

the 13th International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA 2006), was included in The

2007 Public Art Year in Review, presented on June 3, 2007 at The Americans for the Arts

Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV. The Public Art Network (PAN) established The

Public Art Year in Review in 2001 to celebrate the most successful, innovative, and

exciting public art projects in the United States. It is an honor to be one of only 40 projects

recognized from among over 300 by this year’s guest jurors, Larry Kirkland and Miwon

Kwan. Submitted to PAN by Mary Rubin, Senior Project Manager, San Jose Public Art

Program, Hasegawa’s installation won the only Recognition Award in the entire United

States for art projects with his first show in America.

Although D-K Live is easily perceived as “high tech”, its purpose is to regain the natural

rhythms of life for the 21st Century. It is an entirely new living art form that transcends

time and engulfs space. It is the interval between one moment and the next, the infinite

world in an instant. It is like an endless sunset, like the space between the lines of a haiku, between colors, between sounds, between times…the essence of Japanese art, updated for a digitized world.

In fact, the Kakejiku in D-K refers to the decorative, seasonal and regularly changed

hanging scrolls displayed in the traditional tokonoma alcove, the spiritual heart of the Japanese home.

Hasegawa’s D-K Live installation, sponsored by Kobe Biennale 2007, at the Marina

Stage through the weekend, is designed to introduce his art to the city. Later on this year,

his D-K Live installation will become the nighttime symbol of the prestigious Kobe

Biennale when projected onto its site, October 6 to November 25, 2007. Other Kobe

Last Friday's D-K Live installation at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum

D-K LIVE at Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Kobe city, Japan

On 28th of June,2007, Akira Hasegawa participated a symposium conference for 100 days before the Kobe Biennale 2007 that will be taken place in October 2007. In that evening, d-k live was started in the harbour side of Hyogo Museum of Art after the sunset.The security-guard said approximately 250 visitors came to see d-k on 28th evening.

On 29th, Friday, in spite of sudden storm of rain in Kobe city before the sunset ( around 18:30 ), the rain had been all stopped and the d-k live started to be perform in front of public by Akira Hasegawa. Though his friend, a Japanese Buyo (nichibu) danser, Shinnosuke FUJIMA had been prepared in Buyo costume in order to danse in the light of d-k, he got all sweat in that ugly rain and he abandoned to perform his dance in the live. I chatted with him, I was very sorry that I could not see his performance in that evening.

Akira Hasegawa, as usual, he showed his soul, the life of universe, the light of god at the harbour side of the Museum.

Over the second week of August, all of downtown San Jose -- self-proclaimed capital of California's Silicon Valley -- was transformed into an exhibition venue for electronic and new media art. This was the inaugural ZeroOne art festival, timed to coincide with the 13th annual symposium of the ISEA (Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts), an organization founded in the Netherlands in 1990 to foster "interdisciplinary academic discourse and exchange among culturally diverse organizations and individuals working with art, science, and emerging technologies."
Although there were contributions from all over the world, the theme for ISEA2006 was the Pacific Rim, resulting in a strong presence of artists from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and, of course, Japan. Composer Ryoji Ikeda presented two audiovisual pieces: C4I and datamatics, the former originally commissioned by YCAM (Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media), and the latter commissioned specifically for ZeroOne. The Breadboard Band, a group led by Masayuki Akamatsu of IAMAS (International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences, located in Gifu), gave an improvisational outdoor concert using ad hoc circuit boards to produce pulses and washes of raw electronic sound, constantly rewiring their equipment live on stage.

The centerpiece of the entire festival was digital artist Akira Hasegawa's nightly illumination of the new San Jose City Hall. Completed in October 2005 and designed by Richard Meier, the focus of the building is a symbolic rotunda in the form of a glass dome, with a gently curving wall of beige stone behind it. Each evening for the duration of the festival, the city turned off the streetlights and turned on the mist nozzles, while Hasegawa used 15 data projectors of 10,000 lumens each to light up the area with gradually changing abstract images of his own creation. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people filled the plaza in front of the dome, traffic slowed in wonderment, and the city center came alive. Indeed, the night after the festival had finished, hopeful crowds were still gathering in the plaza.

The installation was another example of Hasegawa's ongoing Digital Kakejiku (D-K) project. Over the last few years, he has similarly illuminated various locales across Japan and China, not to mention the Acropolis in Athens. The method is always the same, but the result is always a site-specific installation. D-K is a method of subtly transforming an existing environment, analogous to the kakejiku from which it takes its name -- the traditional Japanese hanging scroll, changed in response to the season, the weather, or the guest. Although D-K images are randomly changed at sixty-second intervals, the transitions are imperceptible. Successive images are smoothly blended into one another by a computer that constantly interpolates and updates the projected pixels. The original still images merge into an uninterrupted flux; at a glance, it seems static, but look away for a minute and it is entirely transformed.

Not unlike watching a never-ending sunset, the D-K audience tends to fall into a meditative state. Many are content to sit and watch for hours. One evening of the festival, the overwhelming serenity of D-K was emphasized by contrast with the equally overwhelming performance art of Survival Research Laboratories occurring a few blocks away. Featuring enormous gladiatorial robots battering and burning each other to destruction over the course of a show, accompanied by stunningly loud sounds, SRL performances have a story of sorts, and most definitely a conclusion, but D-K has neither -- simply an indeterminate, timeless ambience.

Members of the San Jose City Council are now discussing the possibility of making D-K permanent. It is hard to think of a more appropriate city to have a significant piece of digital art as its centerpiece -- and beyond the obvious aesthetic merits, Hasegawa's work was able to transform a deserted downtown plaza into a vibrant, popular public space.

One of the famous Japanese Summer Bon-Odori festival,
known as 'Kaze-no-bon' or 'Owara' which is taken place at
Yatsuo town, Toyama Prefecture, Japan in the season of late summer around end of August until beginning of September ( 20th of August until 3rd of September.... ), the festival accept several 100 thousands visters every season.

Mr. Hasegawa of digital kakejiku artist (d-k art ) had fullfilled with his magical lighting
over a Buddhism temple, called 'Myoumon-ji' temple in Yatsuo town at the time of pre-festival held in Suwa-machi and Kami-shin machi on 26th of August 2006. Some 10 thousands of visiters would not know the d-k event at Tenmyou-temple.

Last week San Jose hosted a huge digital art conference and exhibition called ZeroOne, held in association with the International Symposium of Electronic Art. I went on Tuesday with Francis and Simona to check out an art piece created by their friends called Acclair, a provocative piece on the intersection of profiling, security, and advertising. We also got to see massive images get projected onto San Jose City Hall the result was quite spectacular. I also wanted to see the Survival Research Labs show on Friday, but it was long sold out.
This is the first time I've ever seen people from San Francisco come to San Jose to see art. I hope it's not the last.

Fri, Aug 11 - We went down to City Halll to see the DK project. It was the epitome of what the festival should be. Everyone could enjoy the spectacle and be a part of it regardless of their tech level of understanding. Every moment was unique and engaging. It should be a permanent installation!

Mon, Aug 7th-So we pretty much crashed the press tour of the ZeroOne exhibits in South Park Hall today ( I don't know why they wouldn't invite gallery owners for a preview...we tend to talk alot!).

We went off on our own and got to see some of the exhibits, and talk with some of the artists, many of whom are great to speak with. We're looking forward to having these international artists in our downtown for a

I also remember seeing this iece last night. Akira Hasegawa, D-K San Jose was one of the best pieces I saw so far. Just beautiful. I thought that the idea of repurposing the public space as a foprm of massive Japanese wall scroll might be a little trite, but it really surprised me. For a conceptualist/activist like myself, i was a little shocking to be drawn into this space so strongly. I think what surprised me was the fact that so many people inhabited the space and were playing with the piece on the catwalks, and just thoroughly enjoying themselves shows me the qualitiative/transformative difference public art has.

Running concurrently with ISEA will be the inaugural ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge, which will take place every two years from now on. More than 100 events, talks and installations will take over San Jose for a week, and several arts institutions—in San Jose and overseas—are sponsoring the high-tech hoedown. The whole shebang will make the Tapestry Arts Festival look like a Sunday-afternoon bingo game at a Baptist old-folks home.

Here are just some of the things planned:

Troika Ranch. A high-tech collective featuring Mark Coniglio and Dawn Stoppiello that combines modern dance with computer music, theater and performance art. Ever seen a dancer with electronic sensors on her body that drive the real-time interactive music and video accompaniment? Well, that's the kind of thing that Troika does.

VJ Tulse Luper. The North America premiere of a project by notorious film director Peter Greenaway that functions as a "game [that] is part of the search for a crossover format that breaks the boundaries and rules that have been imposed by film, theater, books, games and other traditional media." Greenaway's appearance was not confirmed at presstime, however.

etoy.CORPORATION. A European new-media art collective who rose to prominence during the beginnings of the World Wide Web. At that time, they were sued by an übercorporate entity called etoys.com—a children's retailer—that didn't like them using a similar URL, although they had theirs first. It was the first major example of a corporate monolith trying to use its power to smash a group of independent web-based artists. etoy.CORPORATION then launched a worldwide effort to help bankrupt etoys.com and pretty much succeeded at driving the company's stock all the way down to nearly zero. The entire sequence of events dramatically affected academic discourse on what was then a relatively new topic: Internet commerce.

Last and absolutely not least, Survival Research Laboratories (SRL). Those wonderfully inappropriate troublemakers from San Francisco who stage violent robotic machine war/performance spectacles with Situationist titles like The Pleasures of Uninhibited Excess or The Unexpected Destruction of Elaborately Engineered Artifacts. Bring earplugs for that one, or else you'll be in trouble. A hot August night in San Jose is just perfect for machines, violence, noise and flamethrowers, and you will not see this ditty mentioned in the Downtown Association's calendar of events, I guarantee you.

All in all, there will be hundreds of artists from around the globe descending upon San Jose, and there are so many events going on 24/7 that it's impossible to break it all down with any degree of acumen. Where Art Thou Net.Art? On Zero One/ ISEA 2006

The long awaited Zero One/ ISEA 2006 took over
San Jose, California, two weeks ago in a
sprawling, city-wide, mega-festival celebrating
art and technology in the heart of Silicon
Valley. Much has already been written about it,
from daily observations in the local papers to a
feature in the New York Times, from the
Blogosphere to the listservs. As one who has been
immersed in the new media scene since the late
1980s, I would like to contribute a bit of
historical context to the discussion: I offer my
commentary from a pre-millennial perspective,
when the dream emerged in the 1990s, during an
era of optimism and promise, the dream of a new
art form that would side-step a mainstream art
world mired in curators, museums, galleries,
objects, and old aesthetic issues. This was the
dream of Net.Art, a revolutionary new
international movement of artists, techies, and
hackers, led in large part by the unassuming,
unabashedly ambitious new media curator from the
Walker Art Center, Steve Dietz, now director of
Zero One.

These were heady times indeed. I met Steve in
1997 while I was in residence at the San Jose
Museum of Art. His research had brought him to
the holy Mecca of new media, Silicon Valley and
the community of artists in the Bay Area who had
been working with new technologies since the dawn
of the personal computer. He wanted to meet Joel
Slayton (who would later become director of the
2006 ISEA Symposium), so I escorted him over to
San Jose State University where Joel is head of
the CADRE Laboratory for New Media.

Shortly thereafter, Steve launched two
groundbreaking Net.Art exhibitions, Shock of the
View, and Beyond Interface, both of which brought
together leading Net artists exploding on the
scene: Mark Amerika, Natalie Bookchin, Masaki
Fujihata, Ken Goldberg, Eduardo Kac, Jodi, Mark
Napier, Alexei Shulgin, to name just a few. It
was a time of artistic transformation, new
paradigms, hypernovels, distributed authorship,
and globally extended, real-time, robotic,
collective art. It seemed anything was possible.
By 1999, David Ross was Director of the San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Intel was pouring
millions into Artmuseum.net, and there seemed no
end to the surging tide of experimental new media
art. It was at that time that early discussion
began of an international festival of art and
technology in Silicon Valley. Beau Takahara
founded the organization Ground Zero, which would
later become Zero One.

But with the new millennium the tides would turn:
Natalie Bookchin announced the death of Net.Art,
the tech boom was a bust, and both David Ross and
Steve Dietz were ousted from their museum jobs
for harboring visionary aspirations in an
economic downturn. So with the announcement that
the Zero One Festival and the ISEA Symposium
would launch in 2006 in San Jose, with Steve
Dietz at the helm, it was something like the
Phoenix rising from the ashes.

And it rose with a bang! "Seven Days of Art and
Interconnectivity," with over 200 participating
artists, an international symposium, city-wide
public installations, exhibitions, concerts,
performances, pubic spectacles,
performative-live-distributed cinema, wi-fi
interventions, container culture, skateboard
orchestras, digital dance, sine wave surfing,
datamatics, surveillance balloons, a pigeon blog,
the squirrel-driven Karaoke Ice Battle on wheels,
and to top it off a nostalgic, bombastic
blast-from-the-past from Survival Research
Laboratories. The 13th International Symposium on
Electronic Art Exhibition took over the sprawling
South Hall at the Convention Center. Its themes:
Interactive City, Pacific Rim, Transvergence,
Edgy Products, and on and on... spoke of enough
technology to wire a third world nation.

And so, with all the buzz, and the sheer largesse
of this ambitious festival of new media, I
couldn't help ponder how it was connected to the
original Net.Art dream, when a new art form arose
from networking every computer on every desktop
and engaging a global audience in new, pervasive
ways that became possible as technology was
increasingly ubiquitous and transparent. The
Net.Art dream would call into question our
relationship to the new media, as art has always
aspired, to critique its impact on our lives, our
culture, our communications systems, our
relationships, our view of the world, our own
changing humanity in a technological world. I
couldn't help but to wonder, what exactly
happened to that dream, once driven by a small
fringe core of artists, writers, thinkers, and
curators, and now practiced by literally
thousands of techno-artists emerging from every
university and art school across the planet, many
of whom converged in San Jose for Zero One / ISEA.

The first thing that came to mind was that art
and technology no longer exists on the fringe of
the artworld, and in fact, the demarcation
between art and engineering has blurred
considerably. At Zero One you couldn't tell the
artist from the engineer (Billy Kluver must be
rolling in his grave). Joseph Beuys' notions of
social sculpture, or Allan Kaprow's participatory
Happenings now inform the new systems of art that
have dissolved the distinction between artist and
non-artist, between performer and audience. For
example, the Interactive City theme, organized by
Eric Paulos, sought "urban-scale projects for
which the city is not merely a palimpsest of our
desires but an active participant in their
formation."

In the installations of Jennifer Steinkamp at the
San Jose Museum of Art, I saw suburban moms
taking snapshots of their kids in strollers
bathed in layers of colored light. In the
Listening Post by Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin, also
at SJMA, the artists orchestrated chat room
discussion, in real-time, from around the globe.
Etoy's mesmerizing Mission Eternity involved a
trailer installation parked outside SJMA in the
downtown Plaza, which investigated personal data
storage for the afterlife (ashes to ashes, bits
to bits).

There was good art and there was bad art, but
everywhere you turned there was art or something
like art permeating the physical spaces of
downtown San Jose (including the mobile light
rail cars and the dome of City Hall), as well as
the invisible ether of the airwaves, from
bluetooth networks to cellular tours (the latest
rage). There was very little time to spend with
any particular work. Everyone was engaged in high
gear, moving from one venue to the next. In Bill
Viola's keynote address, he made the prescient
remark, "artists are jumping into a train for a
high speed ride while they're still laying the
tracks ahead."

The hyper-adrenalin flow resonated in the on-line
commentary as well, where, if you read the
considerable Blog chatter surrounding Zero One/
ISEA, you would find that the experience became
concentrated on sheer movement and the social
networking that reigns supreme at all conferences
and festivals.

And so what about the dream of Net.Art? Those of
us who have spent countless hours, in the past
decade, bemoaning the loss of the dream could now
say that the dream had been realized (for better
or for worse). I heard artist friends complain
about the democratization of Net.Art, the selling
out of Net.Art, the "mainstreamization" of
Net.Art, and other remarks I won't mention here,
and yet, I think that we would all agree that the
uber-dream of Net.Art -- to dismantle the
precious nature of the object, an art that would
defy the walls of the museum, that would, as
expressed in Roy Ascott's Museum of A Third Kind,
reject the notion of the physical museum space
altogether, the dream of Net.Art as a force that
would rewire the experience of art, a "fantasy
beyond control" according to Lynn Hershman -- had
become a living, breathing reality in San Jose
for those compressed seven days.

And if you turned to the Blogosphere there were
plenty of critics: Patrick Lichty wrote, "There
are many topics, like locative media, data
mapping, ecologies, and so on that are being
explored. On a rhetorical level I have to ask
whether these are the right ones and why these
are the ones that are compelling to us." And on
the CRUMB list, I found an insightful comment by
Molly Hankwitz, who said, "I think the process of
interaction must be done very carefully. The
worst thing is the mainstreaming of situationism
into a middle class playground."

Finally, I turn to Mark Amerika, one of the
original dreamers, for a closing observation:
"Net art is in many ways still the most alive and
accessed art movement ever to NOT be absorbed
into the commercial art worldÉ and that's
fantastic!" Perhaps the success of Zero One /
ISEA was in its commitment to concentrate on
experimental media art, to emphasize media art's
inclusive, democratic, and participatory nature,
and lastly, that contemporary art must embrace
the new technologies - shamelessly, fearlessly,
defiantly. Net.Art may be dead, but Net Art 2.0
is alive and kicking.

It's nice to know I'm not alone. The personal memoirs of Randal's are just that ..., personal memoirs. To the author we acknowledge experience, but in no way does it constitute history.
And do we even accept any history of an art form still in motion? Of course not, maybe in 20 years (and they will read our texts here)

To be fair, Steve did bring a knowledge of contemporary art discourse to the new media picnic and encouraged others to taste it at the Walker. Looking back with perfect hindsight vision it was probably the attempt to institutionalize too quickly that led to its demise. After all, new media already had its own established institutions that were more than capable of keeping the focus on the innovation needed for corporate support.

Not everyone wanted to overthrow the art regime and many wanted to make it more accessible through new media technologies. That was the goal of THE THING in 1991 where there were many long and serious discussions on the BBS and some tentative attempts at online projects from its various nodes. nettime nearly collapsed in the brawls that ensued throwing off alternatives such as 7/11, irational.org and rhizome. Projects came and went as the dot.com bubble grew and burst and now grows again.

At first I thought Randall Packer's essay was a fake, in true net.art spirit. Now I see it as a provocation but, you know, I don't care enough any more to respond. The earth has turned and while I'm happy for the artists who have found security in their academic positions and participate in conferences like ISEA 2600 to bulk up their CVs my attention has drifted elsewhere. Really, it's like 1991 all over again.

I would have to agree with Robbin Murphy on the institutionalization of media arts. One has to wonder if most work is in demo mode and in the form of a conference presentation is the work succeeding (as work)?

As for Randall's quote of the blogger

The 2006 edition of the internationally renowned ISEA Symposium will be held August 5-13, 2006, in San Jose, California.

The Inter-Society forElectronic Arts (ISEA) is an international non-profit organization fostering interdisciplinary academic discourse and exchange among culturally diverse organizations and individuals working with art, science and emerging technologies.

Every two years, currently, cities bid to host ISEA's International Symmposium on Electronic Art. Prior host cities include Helsinki, Paris, Sydney, Montreal, Chicago, Manchester and Nagoya. For 2006, the ISEA Board accepted San Jose's proposal to host the Symposium from August 5-13.
ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge
ZeroOne San Jose is a milestone festival to be held biennially that makes accessible the work of the most innovative contemporary artists in the world. In 2006 it will be held in conjunction with the ISEA2006 Symposium.

Themes
There are four major themes that run throughout the Symposium and Festival:

・ Pacific Rim

Chavez will be a central site for open-air installations and performances, including a "container culture" exhibition and anomadic architecture camp. We are planning for 3,000 people from around the world to attend the ISEA 2006 Symposium and up to 100,000 to attend a lecture, exhibition, performance, concert or otherwise participate in ZeroOne San Jose.

D-K ( D i g i t a l - K a k e j i k u )

D-K (Digital Kakejiku), which in English can be translated as " a moving Digital-Hanging Scroll", arises in one's mind, specifically relative to what one views. It is the combination of sensory perception and subconscious awareness. The changing scenery of the sunset, the "space" between haiku lines, the "space" between sounds, and the "space" between times - none are tangible, but all are part of experiencing "the moment". When experiencing D-K, the things that you see and feel all come from you. If they didn't exist in you, you would not be able to perceive them in the first place.

At a glance, D-K seems to consist of the visual elements seen on paintings. However, this is a completely new art form that uses a different communication style from other art forms which utilize the story telling approach. D-K is a sensitizing instrument that is generated by discontinuous data, and that makes us aware of the time, image, and the idea of a "living present".

Its purpose is to regain the rhythm of life for 21stCentury humanity.
It is an entirely new living art form that transcends time and engulfs
space,.

D-K emerges from your relationship with what you see.
Your vision and your subconscious resonate within your mind, naturally
awakening images.

It is the interval between one moment and the next. By existing in the
"now", you understand the present.
Through this perception, you understand the simultaneity within your
subconscious without nostalgia for the past.
Through time itself, the infinite world may be understood in a single
instant.

In other words, there is only "now". All times are simultaneous.

It is like a sunset, like the space between the lines of a haiku, between
colors, between sounds, between times.
To enjoy perceiving the emptiness in of all these places is to encounter
the spirit of Japanese art, and only humanity can comprehend and traverse
this distance between East and West.

D-K is discontinuous data; it gives us time and spirit, and the sensation of
"being alive here and now".

Exposure Time: two media art installations
by Thomas Daniel, an architect nad partner of FOBA, Kyoto, Japan

Although very different in execution and expression, two recent media art installations in Japan (Akira Hasegawa's "Digital Kakejiku" and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's "Amodal Suspension" shared a number of characteristics: both were nighttime, outdoor public spectacles, both used digital data as the raw material and artificial light as the expressive medium, and both partially relinquished artistic control to computer randomization. In each case, invisible aspects of the digital realm were made visible, rendered in light at scales and speeds available to human perception. Immanent global networks were localized, instantaneous electronic transitions were decelerated; space was shrunk as time was stretched. Ephemeral events rather than physical objects, their magnitude was more temporal than spatial. Their existence relied on duration, or more precisely, on delay: a slowing of the speed of light.

The "refresh rate" of the human brain is somewhere around 1/16th of a second. Above this threshold, sequences of individual events can no longer be consciously distinguished. A clicking sound faster than 16 Hertz becomes a low bass note; an animated cartoon slowed to fewer than 16 frames per second resolves into a series of individual images. The illusory movement of cinema is the result of interpolation between still pictures by the viewer's brain. Media artist Akira Hasegawa jokes that Disney should return half our money, as we are doing half the work.

Digital Kakejiku-
The theme of Hasegawa's own artistic project, entitled 'Digital Kakejiku' (or D-K), is the perception of that interval. Over three
nights in April 2003, Hasegawa projected a series of unrelated abstract pictures (all previously created by him with a computer) onto the exterior surfaces of Kanazawa Castle, complemented by music from composer Ryoji Ikeda piped through thirty speakers distributed across the castle grounds - the intent was to totally immerse the audience.
Although the images were changed at one-minute intervals, there were no abrupt transitions. They were smoothly blended into one another by a computer constantly calculating the intervening states and updating the projection. The source images were lost in the flux, merging into a single seamless animation. There was no goal, no evolution, no climax. The beginning and end moments were arbitrary. The gradual movement was barely noticeable. At a glance, it seemed perfectly still, but look away for a minute, and it would be totally transformed.

The Kanazawa Castle installation was the first major D-K event, repeated in October at the construction site of Kanazawa's 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa). Several other D-K installations have been realized or are in planning, but Hasegawa has been developing the technique itself for a decade. His early experiments used computer monitors, and later shifted to video projectors. Hasegawa sees D-K as an architectural material, able to actively engage and transform any context, applicable at scales ranging from urban event to computer screensaver. It is practically impossible to freeze-frame exactly the same image twice, and the possibilities of infinite variation have already attracted wide attention: D-K images have been commissioned to convert identical, mass-produced items into unique artifacts, from Mitsubishi Bank credit cards to Issey Miyake fabrics to the billboards at the Nagano Winter Olympics.

The kakejiku is a hanging scroll, usually found in the tokonoma alcove of the traditional Japanese house. They are changed frequently, according to the season, the mood or the guest that particular day. Like the original kakejiku, Hasegawa sees D-K as fundamentally relational and participatory: "It is the combination of sensory perception and subconscious awareness. The changing scenery of the sunset, the 'space' between haiku lines, the 'space' between sounds, and the 'space' between times - none are tangible, but all are part of experiencing 'the moment'. When experiencing D-K, the things that you see and feel all come from you."(1)

There is a composition by Frank Zappa entitled 'The Girl in theMagnesium Dress' which he describes as being made of 'digital dust'.(2) It was created on the Synclavier (a combined synthesizer / sampler / sequencer) by taking the digital file of an existing composition and stripping away the numbers representing pitch and duration (ie melody and rhythm), leaving only peripheral data indicating the specific dynamics for each note. This became the rhythm file for the new piece; by assigning pitches to the 'dust', the composer shifted inaudible, abstract data into the realm of audibility.

Analogous to Zappa's musical construction, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's 'Amodal Suspension' project used digital data streams as 'found objects' to provide rhythms for the modulation of light, thereby shifting invisible electronic information into the realm of visibility. E-mail messages sent via the Amodal Suspension website were encoded into
sequences of light pulses at a rate of four letters per second (two per second in the case of Japanese characters). Variations in brightness were determined by the statistical frequency of the given letter in its original language, and the spaces between words became moments of darkness. The messages were not forwarded; instead, their addressees were notified by e-mail that messages were 'waiting for them in the sky of Yamaguchi'.

'Amodal Suspension' was in operation for three weeks in November 2003, to mark the opening of the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (designed by Arata Isozaki in collaboration with the performance art troupe Dumb Type). Reminiscent of the artist's earlier 'Vectorial Elevation' (Mexico City, 1999), the installation hardware was an array of twenty computer-controlled searchlights distributed around an empty field adjacent to the YCAM. The encoded messages were passed amongst the searchlights at random: two beams would intersect, and the pattern would be picked up by the second beam as the first was extinguished. Up to ten messages were in circulation at any given moment, a 'literal flash mob', as Brian Massumi described it.(3) With each exchange, the lights were angled higher and the beams faded in intensity, until the message was accessed from the website by its addressee, or possibly by another observer. The original text was then briefly displayed on an electronic billboard fixed to the exterior of the YCAM, using computer software to translate between English and Japanese. Anyone anywhere with a PC or mobile phone was able to contribute, and dedicated access pods were installed at the YCAM and at sympathetic institutions from San Paolo to New Delhi, including V2 in Rotterdam, ZKM in Karlsru"he, Eyebeam in New York, the Sendai Mediatheque, the Dessau Bauhaus and the MIT Media Lab. A realtime view of the sky over Yamaguchi City was projected on the ceiling of each venue.

The visual impact of this robotic choreography was simultaneous fluid grace and nervous energy, a web of random strobing that appeared to be on the brink of emergent order. The installation was like a holding pen for delayed communication, rendered temporarily illegible; it was not information that was suspended in the sky, but more like its aura: the shadow of the network.

The messages being used were all triggered by the installation itself (and the majority were trivial or nonsensical); if no one had participated, nothing would have happened. This perhaps explains why the artist says the work is about loneliness rather than communication - he was not tracing existing connections, but revealing the desire to make contact. However, Lozano-Hemmer did not intend the participatory aspect of 'Amodal Suspension' as an abdication of his own artistic control:
'Like other artists who grew up with Postmodernism, I used to believe that we were finally being liberated from authorship [...] now I argue that there are crucial decisions made in the creation of an interactive platform that are intensely personal and directed. One's obsessions, myths, nightmares, values, and biases are clearly reflected even in the most open pieces [...] the pleasure of the work is still in seeing how surprising behaviors might emerge during interaction. We engineer a platform, but people build their own relations, be it party or funeral.'(4) Indeed, his input was mostly parametric rather than direct, a gentle guiding of the viewer in the hope that the results would be mutually entertaining. You could not wish for a more affable media artist; Lozano-Hemmer said goodbye to the citizens of Yamaguchi with an outdoor barbecue party where he took the role of DJ.

Exposure time-
The communal, public nature of both 'Amodal Suspension' and 'Digital Kakejiku' contained a hint of ritual, like modern-day secular ceremonies. In adding yet another layer of imagery to the saturated urban environment, their virtue is to be both unnecessary and inexplicable, pure spectacle for its own sake. Lozano-Hemmer again: 'Cities - especially cities like Tokyo - need more images. My notion is that our globalized cities are infested by the same image. This image
has a very well-defined 'topdown' commercial purpose. My call is for a radical departure: more images! More self-representation, more questions, more destabilization of prevalent patterns, more uncontrollability, more silence, more abstraction, more uselessness.'(5)

Both installations used digital technology to introduce vitality and unpredictability, apparently transcending Walter Benjamin's famous assertion that mechanical (and by extension, digital) reproduction erodes the singularity, or 'aura', of the work of art. It seems that here singularity is ensured by animation, something that Benjamin himself intuited in his essay 'Little History of Photography'.(6) He suggests that the artistic value of photography is a function of how
well it captures the temporal dimension, equating the shrinking of exposure time with a corresponding loss of 'aura'. The exposure times of early photographs were measurable in hours, and the resulting stills were unavoidably imbued with traces of turbulence, a virtual dynamism collapsed into static images; there is no such thing as a still life.
Reproducing time-dependent art in the pages of a magazine is problematic to say the least. Ideally, these photographs capture a sense of the original continuity and movement, but they are still no substitute. This is work that must be experienced in its full singularity, locality and temporality: media art, unmediated.

10 years records of the d-k installations produced by Akira HASEGAWA (aha).
The concept of d-k was first presented for public in Tokyo Dome Exposition, 1996. D-K (Digital Kakejiku) art have been performed at several religious places around Kanazawa city, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan and the architectures of those buddhisme temples and the shintoisme shirines were lighten up by d-k art.

Other than those religious architectures, the building surfaces of museum, commercial buildings, the interiors of a restaurant and cafe were fullfilled with the lighting of D-K art and I have been observed those records.
